Alpacas at
Rock Chimney Farm

Another blue for Marzipan! Grizz - the show stopper! Tashi takes home the big ribbon!
We invite you to meet the Rock Chimney Farm herd, which you may notice has grown smaller in recent years. I developed wrist problems over two years ago, which required us to reduce our herd to a more manageable size for me. As you can see, we have had several fantastic sales years, and now are down to a core group which distills the qualities and characteristics we value the most. At the moment, the only alpacas we have remaining for sale are two junior herdsires, both showing great promise as yearlings. We are actually in the process of rebuilding our sales list, as we sold more than we had actually intended to! Give us awhile and then check back! In the meantime, if anyone catches your eye, contact us and we'll talk! Our sales include the standard reproductive guarantees (including a 30-day live cria guarantee for a bred female), up to 3 months free board, multiple purchase discounts, and our unflagging support.

A fairly new health concern throughout our industry is the possibility for an alpaca to contract Bovine Viral Diarehea (BVD). This has been a very difficult problem for the cattle industry over the years. It is not prevalent in the alpaca population, but it is present. At RCF, we have instituted some measures to protect our herd from this disease. The primary concern is with the persistently infected (PI) cria, which is an alpaca that has contracted this disease inutero. A PI cria sheds the BVD virus at a rate 1000 times that of a routinely infected animal, and is the primary source for the spread of BVD. A negative PCR blood test is proof that this is not a PI animal. We have had all our alpacas blood tested at RCF. No one showed any evidence of exposure to BVD, and none were PI animals. Further, we maintain a farm with little traffic, and require that any alpaca that comes here has been tested, and will also be quarantined. Our females do not go to another farm to be bred, and we now routinely test all our crias shortly after birth, so you can be sure that the alpaca you purchase from RCF does not have BVD.

Here we would like to make one further guarantee. We have learned, with great distress, that some breeders have begun to use corrective surgery on their promising young males, if they show less than correct front leg position. We believe that this is a bad trend for our industry. We promise you right up front that, "what you see is what you are getting" at RCF. We do not, nor will we ever, correct any conformational flaw with surgery. At Rock Chimney Farm, a conformationally flawed male, who does not correct on his own, will be available at a pet quality price.

Alpacas for Sale

Talk about density & coverage!

RCF Winchester's Duke
Here is a CPeruvian Winchester son to make his pappy proud! Winchester's Duke is out of our blue-ribbon winning dam, RCF TarBaby. Duke has outstanding fiber, fine, dense, crimpy, with wonderful hand and character, and his coverage is phenomenal! I had to shear him in places that I have never shorn before! All of that fiber is packed onto a very sturdy frame with beautiful proportions and excellent conformation. I have not yet found anything to fault in this little fellow. The judge at the VAOBA Expo, Tim Lavan, placed him first in his class, calling him the "standout in the class." He was in strong competition for the Reserve Championship, but lost out to an older male who had a bit more uniformity, according to Tim. I seriously doubt that will be the last shot he has at one, for his show career is just beginning. I believe this is the finest cria that has been produced here at Rock Chimney Farm to date. It will be exciting to watch him come into his full potential!
Sire: CPeruvian Winchester - Dam: RCF TarBAby
DOB: November 23, 2005
Sale Price: $12,000

Looks like a race horse!

RCF Triple Crown
Our little black boy with white trimmings is a Challenger son out of HG Shadow. As a cria, he would tear around the pasture making flying lead changes as he went, looking much like a young horse. Thus, the name Triple Crown seemed a perfect fit. He is still extremely athletic. Trip also has a lot of curiousity and a willing attitude. He won both Jr. Youth Performance classes at very his first show. His conformation is flawless, his fleece is fine with a lovely hand, and his coverage is excellent. This Junior shows great promise for making someone a wonderful herdsire, especially with all of the black and gray genes in his background! He has definitely moved beyond just being cute!
Sire: Royal P. Challenger - Dam: HG Shadow
DOB: October 25, 2005
Sale Price: $7,500

Breeding Stock of Rock Chimney Farm

Brood Females

Our Alpha female. Nobody messes with Shadow!

HG's Shadow
Shadow has lustrous, blue-black fiber with good "hand" and dense coverage. She is an extremely good-looking girl with excellent conformation and an outstanding head. You have to work at it to ruffle this girl's feathers! Shadow has produced five healthy, beautiful babies with ease. Her second, sired by Lord Byron, was a blue ribbon winner at the MaPaca Jubilee. Her next two, RCF Hulla and RCF Mystic Dancer were true-black females...and a stunning girls they are! Shadow birthed a beautiful little black male last October, sired by Royal Peruvian Challenger. He has a white snip on his nose and varying amounts of white on his feet, and moves like a racehorse. He is a very exciting young male. Shadow is being held over to get on the same birthing schedule as the rest. She will be bred to Thunder Creek's beautiful gray herdsire, Top Gun, in the spring. A lovely little gray girl would be very nice, Shadow!
Sire: Lanark's Jackson - Dam Lanark's Nell
DOB: September 1995

Our all-time favorite! Exquisite fiber and lovely temperament.

RCF Grizzabella
This girl is the "Grand Dam" of our herd and the first cria sired by our former herdsire, Lord Byron. Covered in beautiful fiber, medium taupe in color, our Grizz is a big girl with the works who knocks 'em dead both in and out of the show ring! She has performed well amongst very stiff competition, both in halter and in fleece classes. We are quite proud of our Grizz! Not only is she beautiful, but she is an outstanding mother, providing excellent care and plenty of milk to her crias. Her first cria, sired by Royal Peruvian Challenger, was an enhanced copy of herself, and a top ribbon-winner in her own right. Next, she gave us a true-black little female, also a blue-ribbon winner, sired by Alta Luna's Clipper. We liked that combination so well that we repeated the breeding and the result was a beautiful little dark taupey brown male! After that, she gave us a medium brown male sired by Orion, and finally, a bay-black male sired by Royal Peruvian Challenger. This little fellow has it all! We have no complaints about Grizz's production--we just want her to keep it up! She is bred to HHF Marzipan for a spring 2007 cria. Now, if this one is just a female.....
Sire: Lord Byron - Dam: Lanark's Nell
DOB: November 1998

Another beautiful girl from Grizz!

RCF TarBaby
RCF TarBaby combines the best of both her sire and dam to make her a truly outstanding little girl: Wonderful bone and conformation, beautiful fine black fiber with high-frequency crimp, excellent coverage and density, and a lovely little head! Wow! That she also got Grizz's easy-going temperament is just icing on the cake! This girl is special! The judge at the VA Classic thought so too, giving her the first place in the Yearling Black Female class! Not bad for the only show she has entered! TarBaby produced her first cria in November, a gorgeous little light/medium brown male sired by Hobby Horse Farm's CPeruvian Winchester. This little guy is all that we were hoping for! TarBaby is bred to Marzipan for a 2007 spring cria. Now that should be something to get excited about!
Sire: Alta Luna's Clipper - Dam: RCF Grizzabella
DOB: October 2002

A striking true-black girl!

JennaBelle
An exciting addition made to our herd in 2003 is JennaBelle, a lovely true black girl. Jenna was originally from the High Plains Ranch, a Canadian producer known for the quality of their alpacas. Jenna has produced five gorgeous crias to date, three of them black, and we are hoping that she will continue this trend for us. Jennabelle has strong true-black genes from both her dam and sire going back several generations. She is conformationally sound, with good coverage, outstanding luster, and a very nice soft handle to her fleece, along with regular, Merino-style crimp right to the tips of her fiber. Jenna should certainly help "blacken up" our herd nicely! She delivered us a beautiful little bay black boy, sired by Peruvian Superstition (dark fawn), the end of September. Jenna has shown that she is all that we look for in a dam: she is an easy birther, an attentive mother, and produces abundant milk! Jenna produced a fawn male cria with white markings in the spring, sired by our favorite, Andando. RCF Gilderoy Lockheart is a sweet boy, but gelding material, which was quite disappointing to us. Jenna is bred to Marzipan for a spring 2007 cria. We have high hopes for that one!
Sire: DHH Major - Dam: Lo Southern Belle
DOB: August 1998

Crias

Another Challenger/Grizz offspring!

RCF Luck of the Draw
Born this spring, our Luck of the Draw was named a bit "tongue-in-cheek," as he was our 8th male cria in a row. Luck is another potential Junior herdsire bred and born at RCF, out of Grizzabella and sired by Royal Peruvian Challenger. Challenger usually stamps his cria with his excellent conformation, and Luck is no exception. He also inherited a number of his dam's fine fiber characteristics, only surpassing her in the wonderful softness of its hand. Grizz is one of the most placid and reliable alpacas I have ever known, so his temperament should be outstanding as well. All around, this is one promising little fellow! Watch out for this boy....I am betting that he is going to make his mark in a number of ways!
Sire: Royal Peruvian Challenger - Dam: Grizzabella
DOB: May 2006

What a sweetheart!

RCF Gilderoy Lockheart
Meet our RCF Gilderoy Lockheart, named by our youngest grandchild who was reading Harry Potter at the time of his birth. We laughed and agreed that it was a suitable name for this boy. A truly sweet little fellow, he lacks some of the attributes we look for in a herdsire prospect, but he should make a lovely gelding. We intend to keep him on the farm, for we have all fallen in love with him!
Sire: Andando - Dam: JennaBelle
DOB: April 2005

Geldings

Granddaughter's favorite!

RCF Macusani's Bandido
One of the crias born in our early years is this fellow, RCF Macusani's Bandido. Named for his mischieviously marked face, our list of alpacas cannot be complete without Bandit. He serves as a babysitter, transport companion, senior statesman, and most importantly, our granddaughter's show boy. He does a creditable job with the obstacles, and she has a grand time taking him through them. Like most farms, we value our geldings, too, for all that they can do!
Sire: Peruvian Macusani - Dam: HG Shadow
DOB: October 1998
